North Carolina vs. West Virginia things to do charlotte, nc

Get ready for an exciting matchup between North Carolina and West Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl! These teams are no strangers to each other, as this will be their third postseason meeting. Interestingly, despite both being in the Southern Conference from 1950-53, it wasn’t until the 1997 Gator Bowl that they first faced off.

Their last showdown in the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl, now known as the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, ended with a close 31-30 victory for West Virginia, bringing their all-time series to a tie at 1-1.

West Virginia had an impressive season under the guidance of fifth-year coach Neal Brown. Despite a rough 5-7 record the previous year, they bounced back strong with an 8-4 record, their best regular season since 2018, and secured four wins in their last five games. The Mountaineers are heading into the bowl season with great momentum.

On the other hand, North Carolina started off strong with a 6-0 record led by star quarterback Drake Maye, who was even in the Heisman Trophy conversation. However, their season took a turn when they suffered a loss to Virginia on Oct. 21. They went on to lose two more games by an average of 15 points and finished with a 2-4 record in their last six games.

Unfortunately, Tar Heels fans will not see Maye on the field for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl as he has chosen to opt out in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft. Instead, redshirt freshman Conner Harrell will take the reins at quarterback. Harrell has had limited playing time this season but now has a golden opportunity to showcase his skills and leave a lasting impression on the coaching staff.

Get ready for an evening of thrilling football as North Carolina and West Virginia battle it out in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl! Both teams have proven to be formidable opponents, and this matchup is sure to bring out the best in both sides. With a tie series at 1-1, it’s anyone’s game and we can expect an intense and competitive showdown on the field.

But it’s not just about the game itself – the Duke’s Mayo Bowl has become known for its unique traditions and celebration of southern culture. From the iconic victory celebration where players are doused in a mayonnaise-based condiment, to the delicious tailgate food and live music performances, this bowl game is an experience unlike any other.

So grab your team gear, get ready for some serious football action, and join in on the excitement and festivities at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl!
